26 May How to pick a great college roommate
Is your child attending a college that allows them to pick a roommate? Believe it or not, picking a roommate can sometimes be the most stressful part of getting ready for college – harder than selecting courses or securing a part-time job. But, with a thoughtful approach that includes networking and some research, your child can find someone to share their first year with, and hopefully, make a life-long friend.
Here are a few tips:
Advise your child to start with some self-reflection . . . think about their sleep habits, cleanliness, eating habits, and interests and use that as a guide for finding a compatible roommate.
Network with your friends and their friends to see if anyone knows of a good match.
Take your search online . . . most colleges will have a Facebook group for newly admitted students and sometimes the best-fit roommates are found there.
