Meet Kate

Hi, I’m Kate Sonnenberg (she/her/hers), the founder of KS College Success and a college admissions expert who has seen the application process from numerous vantage points. As the mother of two young adults whom I assisted on their college admissions journeys (Amherst College ’19 and Wesleyan University ’21), I know where you are now. I began my career in educational consulting at Princeton University, my alma mater, where I worked in the admissions office. My time at Princeton was invaluable; I read thousands of applications each year and gained deep insights into what makes an application stand out. I bring this rich experience, combined with my background in teaching English and lawyerly attention to detail, to guide families and empower students. In every case, I focus on ensuring a good academic, extracurricular, and social fit for the student.

After graduating from Princeton with a degree in history, I spent two years teaching English composition at the National University of Singapore through a fellowship. Returning to the U.S., I attended Columbia Law School. Despite enjoying my time clerking for a federal judge and practicing law, I found my true passion in teaching legal writing.

My commitment to education extends beyond my college and law school teaching experience; before starting KS College Success, I volunteered extensively, providing essay coaching and tutoring to low-income students in Newark, NJ. I also chaired the Princeton University Alumni Schools Committee in Essex and Hudson (NJ) counties, overseeing the alumni interviewing program for over a decade. Today, I continue to give back by serving as the Executive Director of EdPrep Scholars, a non-profit offering free college counseling to high-achieving, low-income students. Here, I mentor volunteer college consultants, work directly with EdPrep scholars, and support guidance counselors in high schools.

In addition to working with students, I share my experience and expertise with my colleagues by coaching other professionals. I teach a course on Summer, Gap Year, and Transfer Students in the University of California-Irvine Independent Educational Consultant Certificate Program and am a partner-mentor in the Wow Writing Workshop College Essay Experience program, guiding other consultants in teaching essay writing.

As a lifelong student of colleges, I regularly visit institutions (over 300 so far) and stay updated on admissions trends by attending and presenting at conferences and participating in numerous seminars and webinars each year. My formal qualifications include a Certificate in College Counseling from UC-Irvine. I am a Certified Educational Planner (AICEP), a certified Wow Writing Workshop essay coach and partner-mentor, and a professional member of IECA, NACAC, NJACAC, HECA, and NCAG.

My approach is deeply influenced by my role as a parent, which enhances my empathy and dedication to the social-emotional health of my students. This personal insight is integral as I help each student navigate the college admission process. While I offer comprehensive guidance to a wide range of students, my specialization lies in working with students aspiring to attend the most selective colleges. My understanding of the admissions process at these elite institutions equips me to offer nuanced and strategic advice, transforming the qualitative aspects of a student’s high school experience into compelling essays and applications. These tailored stories not only highlight a student’s strengths but also illuminate their core values and what they find most meaningful, presenting a well-rounded and authentic representation of each student to the admissions committees.

I hope I can be a part of your student’s unique journey to college admission success.

Hi, I’m Kate Sonnenberg (she/her/hers), the founder of KS College Success and a college admissions expert who has seen the application process from numerous vantage points. As the mother of two young adults whom I assisted on their own college admissions journeys (Amherst College ’19 and Wesleyan University ’21), I know where you are now. And as a former application reader in the Princeton University Admissions Office, where I read thousands of applications each year, I know what is takes to have an application that stands out. I bring this experience, as well as my background teaching English and my lawyerly eye for detail, to help guide families and empower students on their journey to college admissions success.

I am a graduate of Princeton University and the Columbia University School of Law. In addition to practicing law and teaching English composition and legal writing, I have been an active volunteer for years. Prior to launching KS College Success, I provided essay coaching for students who could not afford private counseling, tutored students in Newark, NJ, and, as chair of the Princeton University Alumni Schools Committee in Essex (NJ) and Hudson (NJ) counties, I coordinated the alumni interviewing program in northern New Jersey for over a decade. My commitment to volunteer work continues today. I devoted portion of my time to pro bono work, either directly advising students or supporting guidance counselors at high schools where they can have as many as 400 students in their caseload.

As a student of colleges, over the years I have visited hundreds of colleges where I often meet directly with admissions representatives to get the inside story about college admissions trends. To further my professional development, I regularly attends conferences, seminars, and webinars, including the IECA Summer Training Institute, and I have completed a Certificate in College Counseling from UC-Irvine. I am a member of IECA, NACAC, NJACAC, HECA and NCAG.

When I am not helping students apply to college, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our children. I also train my two German Shepherd dogs, Millie and Jaspers, read, and watch movies.

What I do…

I’m an independent college consultant, but my clients call me a college concierge.

I believe deeply in the transformative power of college. That’s why I love helping students and their families cut through all the chatter so students can navigate the college admissions process with a clear head and focused purpose. Students like working with me because they find colleges that are great fits for them, and they avoid common mistakes in their applications.

Students are empowered to apply wisely, build their confidence, and get it right.
